Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

I have to write a biography on Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn for English, and my teacher wants us to include what he sacrificed in order to become a writer, and I can't find a clear answer anywhere. Also, if it's not too much trouble, can anyone tell me what he wrote about? I have an answer, but I want to make sure it's right. I was happy to learn… He was Russian and lived there back when it was the Soviet Union, a communist government that did not allow people to freely speak or write about anything that disagreed with the government. He wrote books that were critical of the government, and he was thrown into prison and made to work in a labor camp. Later, he was exiled from Russia. So his sacrifice was his freedom.
