I think Malcolm Mcdowell should of won the oscar for best actor in 1971 for his performance for A Clockwork Orange? Instead Gene Hackman won. Should Gene of won or Malcolm. What I found out was – Malcolm McDowell absolutely should have won for A Clockwork Orange as he was nothing short of brilliant in it. The same thing happened to Ralph Fiennes whose performance in Schindler's List is still talked about, yet he lost out to Tommy Lee Jones in 1994. I believe it's because Academy voters were leary to award the relatively unknown (outside of their native England) as both McDowell and Fiennes were, respectively. Hackman had already made a Hollywood splash in 1967 with Bonnie and Clyde and Jones was a well-seasoned television actor and star in Coal Miner's Daughter (1980). Sometimes it seems to be a popularity/sympathy vote which makes it hard to take much stock in the Academy Awards.
