All your Norman Mailer fans out there: Tell me your favorite book and why. Well, I've your answer right here. I'm not a huge Norman Mailer fan but the answer to your question is obvious. If you're only going to read one of his novels, it has to be 'The Naked and the Dead. ' Based on his real-life experiences in the Pacific during WWII, it is Mailer's most important and influential work. It established his reputation as a serious writer and remained on the New York Times ideal seller list for over a year. I should mention, however, that as it *is* a war novel, you're going to be subjected to some unpleasant imagery at times. The war in the Pacific was particularly brutal as neither the US nor the Japanese showed any mercy in combat. It's also a somewhat difficult read due to Mailer's prose style, which is neither user-friendly nor very modern. Forewarned is forearmed. Brave heart, Cindy.
